Work with me

Custom AI software for businesses like yours.

I find where AI can save you hours or win you more work — then I build it, support it, and keep making it better. Builds from around $5,000 AUD. Got something smaller? Just ask.

What I can do for you

Most small businesses are losing time and money to jobs that a bit of well-aimed AI could just… handle. Here’s where it usually pays off.

Never miss another job

An assistant that answers calls, texts, and website enquiries the moment they land — day or night — and books the job or takes down the lead. Work stops slipping away while you’re up a ladder or asleep.

Quotes out in minutes, not evenings

Turn a few photos, a voice note, or a quick description into a draft quote on the spot — instead of losing your nights to admin and losing jobs to whoever replied first.

Nothing slips through the cracks

Automatic follow-ups on quotes, reminders before jobs, and review requests after — quietly chasing the revenue that normally falls through the gaps.

Paperwork that does itself

Invoices, job reports, and safety or compliance docs written up from a quick voice note. I built a live safety-monitoring AI for an industrial-compliance company — this is home turf.

Actually know your numbers

Pull the figures scattered across your bank, your accounting software, and your job records into one clear picture of how the business is really tracking — without you touching a spreadsheet.

Not sure which of these would move the needle for you? That’s exactly what the first (free) call is for — I’ll tell you straight where AI is worth it and where it isn’t.

Proof

Things I’ve built — and what they did.

I haven’t just talked about AI — I’ve shipped it. Two of these I built entirely on my own, from blank page to real, paying users.

01 Built for an industrial-compliance company

A real-time safety agent

AI that watches live site camera feeds and flags hazards and accidents the moment they happen — alerting the team in real time, before a near-miss becomes an incident.

  • Built and shipped to production in two weeks.
  • Paired it with a plain-language assistant that answers “what’s happening on site right now?” — status, compliance, who’s checked in.

02 My own AI product — built solo

Ricordi

An AI platform for music teachers: record a lesson and it becomes a timestamped practice plan automatically. I built the whole thing alone — the AI, the web app, the iPhone app, the brand.

  • AI that turns a lesson recording into a structured, time-stamped practice plan.
  • Live on web and as an iPhone app — proof I take an idea from a blank page all the way to in people’s hands.

03 Built for a video platform

Automatic thumbnail generator

A system that turns any video into eye-catching, on-brand thumbnails automatically — the kind of repetitive busywork that used to eat hours, done in seconds.

  • Built the whole pipeline end-to-end, and made it cheap enough to run at scale.
  • Shipped as a brand-new feature, used right across the platform.

04 My own product — live & paying

Maestrocast

A video platform built for online music lessons. A paying studio runs about 30 lessons a week on it. I built all of it — the product, the software, and the support behind it.

  • Designed and built it from scratch, then looked after real paying customers on it.
  • Proof I don’t just ship and vanish — I keep the thing running.

No surprises

How I take the risk out of it

Custom software has a bad reputation — expensive, never finished, impossible to understand. Here’s how I make sure none of that happens to you.

01

You own everything

The software, the code, the accounts — all yours. No black boxes, no being held hostage by your developer.

02

A fixed price, agreed up front

You know exactly what it costs before any work starts. No open-ended bills, no nasty surprises at the end.

03

Plain English, no lock-in

I explain things in words that make sense, and you’re never trapped. If it’s not working for you, you walk.

04

I don’t disappear

Bug fixes are free, for as long as you want me around — no monthly fee. The only ongoing cost is the actual running cost (hosting, and any AI usage), passed straight on with no markup.

Straight about money

What it costs

A typical build

~$5,000 AUD · one-off

Designed, built, and live — a real piece of software solving a real problem in your business.

Keeping it running

At cost no markup

Bug fixes are free — no monthly fee. You only ever pay the actual running cost (hosting, and any AI usage), passed straight through. New features or changes are quoted separately, so you decide what’s worth it.

Got something smaller? A focused automation can cost less — just ask. The first call is free, and you’ll have a fixed price before anything starts.

FAQ

Common questions.

What does Oli Nelson do?

I build custom AI software for small businesses and trades — things like answering enquiries after hours, turning a photo or voice note into a quote, chasing follow-ups automatically, generating paperwork and compliance docs, and pulling scattered numbers into one clear picture of how the business is going.

How much does it cost?

A typical build is around $5,000 AUD as a one-off — smaller, focused automations can cost less. After that there’s no monthly fee: bug fixes are free, and the only ongoing cost is the actual running cost (hosting, and any AI usage), passed straight on with no markup. New features or changes are quoted separately, so you only pay for what you actually want. You get a fixed price before any work starts, and the first call is free.

Can’t I just build this myself with AI now?

You can get a demo working in an afternoon — turning that into something real, reliable, and safe is the hard part, and it quietly eats weeks of time you don’t have while you’re running the business. The easy 90% isn’t the problem; it’s the last 10%: the edge cases, the customer data and security, the thing falling over at 5pm on a Friday with a customer on the line. Then it needs maintaining as your business and the underlying tools keep changing. I do this all day, so it’s fast and built to hold up — and I fix anything that breaks for free, so it just keeps working without you ever opening the code.

How is this so much cheaper than custom software used to be?

Two reasons, and neither is cutting corners. First, AI has made building software dramatically faster than it was even a couple of years ago. Second, I’ve built up my own reusable foundations, so I’m never starting from a blank page — the slow, expensive groundwork is already done. The running costs stay low too: I tune the AI to do each job at the lowest cost per task, so there’s no scary bill at the end of the month. That’s how a genuine, custom build lands around $5,000 instead of the $50,000-plus an agency would have quoted a few years ago.

I’ve never bought custom software before — is this risky?

No. You own everything that gets built — the software, the code, the accounts. The price is fixed and agreed up front, there’s no lock-in, and I explain everything in plain English. There’s no monthly fee either — bug fixes are free, and you only ever cover the actual running costs at cost.

Do I need to be technical?

Not at all. Most of my clients run hands-on businesses and have never commissioned software before. I handle the technical side and talk to you in normal language about what it actually does for your business.

What kinds of businesses is this for?

Small and owner-run businesses — including trades like electricians, plumbers, and builders — that used to be too small for custom software to make sense. AI has changed the economics, so a tailored tool is now affordable for you.

Where is Oli based, and can he work with me?

I’m based in Australia and work with businesses anywhere. Most of what I build runs in the cloud, so location is rarely a barrier.
